Agenda

In memoriam: Raph Vermeersch, founding member and Honorary Director of BELTUG

It is with deep sadness that we announce that on September 7, Raph Vermeersch, founding member and Honorary Director of BELTUG, lost his battle against illness and passed away. Raph played a very important role in BELTUG’s early years, and was committed to the growth and health of our organisation. We will sorely miss him, and our thoughts go out to his family and friends.

Information and vision
We want BELTUG members to be the best informed ICT decision makers and professionals.

1. 130 members have already registered for our Member Forum and/or Visionair on October 5.

They will be the first to find out the results of our survey, with the priorities from the Belgian ICT decision makers. We have some great presentations lined up: Xerox will present its case study, while Deloitte will explain the risks of cloud computing. International law firm Allen & Overy will guide you through the main privacy problems that can occur when sharing personal information in an international environment. And last but not least: The "BELTUG Visionair" offers an extra source of inspiration, to broaden our views beyond the scope of our daily work. Registration is free for BELTUG members; non BELTUG members pay € 295.

2. RSZ/ONSS decision on GSM for private use

The ONSS has now established the standard value of the benefit in kind for the private use of a company GSM at €150 per year, equalling €12.50 per month. Obviously, this will have important consequences for companies that do not have a system for splitting private and professional use, and for their employees. We have analysed these consequences for you: take a look at the breakdown, available in Dutch and French.

3. Looking for a solution for your used PCs? Close the Gap may be the answer

Finding a solution for used PCs that work fine but that no longer meet your company’s needs, infrastructure or policies is a challenge. If you are looking for a structured solution, you may find your answer with Close the Gap. This not-for-profit organisation helps bridge the digital divide by offering high-quality, reconditioned computers at cost-efficient prices to communities in developing and emerging countries. Close the Gap has collected more than 150,000 items from donors across Europe so far, providing about 500,000 learners with access to e-education daily.

Many BELTUG members already work with Close the Gap; they are all quite enthusiastic about this solution, for its logistical and ecological benefits, but also in terms of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

4. ICT Innovation & Talent Management, Jef Staes and Thomas Cook case

Managing talent and innovation is clearly a top of mind issue for our members. On 14 September, Jef Staes presented us with the concepts he has developed regarding motivation, casting, learning/training, vision and investment. Over 60 delegates from ICT management and HR profiles listened to his ideas, then circulated to discuss them in small groups of peers. Have look at the pictures and presentations.

The challenging afternoon continued with the case story of Thomas Cook. Participants discovered ‘learning tension’, ‘information flow’ and the role that ICT managers play in the ‘learning power’ of their organisation, when they open up to multiple information sources. Geert Sinnaeve showed us how Thomas Cook put the theory into practice, and the impact this had on employee satisfaction with ICT.

5. Video of the panel discussion on flat rates

Business users often like the idea of flat rates for communications services, because these fixed rates for all or some services are both simple and useful in managing ICT costs. But no solution is completely problem-free. Before taking any decision, you should know how flat rates work and their real impact, as well as their disadvantages.
What should your company consider before engaging in a flat rate agreement? What are the limitations and restrictions from the point of view of the provider? BELTUG has already published a discussion paper on the introduction of flat rates (French, Dutch), which explains the effects of the flat rate model for both business users and providers, and considers the various issues involved. Now, you can also view a video summary from the panel discussion.

Lobbying
BELTUG defends your interests and addresses issues with government representatives and service providers

1. Are you using 070 and 090x numbers? Better watch out!

Since April 1st, new fiscal legislation applies for both 090x and 070 numbers. This means companies using these numbers must invoice their customers, and declare the VAT. Check what you need to do to be compliant! In the meantime, some of our members have already informed us that they will stop using these numbers.

2. International Voice Management: to IVPN or not to IVPN?

At the BELTUG session on 22 June we “challenged” Orange and Vodafone on their cross border services for multinational companies. Using an International VPN was one of the topics raised. While both operators advertise their IVPN for mobile, it wasn’t very clear how successful they have been. So we did our own small survey among BELTUG members active in multiple countries, and asked for their opinions. Are IVPNs the Holy Grail or are they just an extra technological burden, only valuable for the volume discounts?

It turns out that the majority of respondents use VPNs domestically but not across borders. With the multiple prerequisites, building and running an IVPN is definitely not a simple task. The goal remains to control international mobile communications costs, and the easiest way to do this is to negotiate the best possible corporate deal.

An IVPN with short codes is often perceived as complex and unnecessary if good rates can be obtained without it. What’s more, many companies using it try to hide the VPN short dial codes from users, and some implement a “force-on-PABX” technique to reroute mobile traffic over the corporate fixed voice network. These actions also help keep the cost of mobile communications low.

So overall, it’s really a mixed bag.

On Saturday, 11 September, BELTUG hosted 120 guests –members and their partners - to a day out in Ghent. The trip was a rousing success, and even the weather played along. It was the sunniest day of the week! Everyone enjoyed their day out, visiting this beautiful and historic city, while getting to know each other on an informal basis. If you weren’t able to make it, see what you missed .

3. Consultation on B-box: results

One of our members is in the process of migrating its Belgacom Teleworking lines from ADSL to VDSL2 with B-box2. However, the member’s application used on the Teleworking line was experiencing connection problems via the B-box2. We organised a consultation, but fortunately their configuration & connection difficulties seem to be exceptional. In the meantime, this member received support from Belgacom on analysing and resolving the situation.
