Agenda

Lobbying

BELTUG defends your interests and addresses issues with government representatives and service providers.

1. BELTUG opinion: Belgacom and the enterprise market: beyond remedy?

A former top executive of Belgacom has accused the incumbent operator of unfair competition. The Competition Council and other competent authorities will now decide whether or not Belgacom violated the law.

BELTUG can only conclude that, in essence, competition is lacking in the enterprise market and Belgacom is still taking the lion’s share. Moreover, the enterprise market is not dynamic. However, BELTUG has high expectations for Telenet and Mobistar. Read the full opinion in NL or FR.

2. BELTUG intervenes in SIP Certification by Belgacom

BELTUG was contacted by a number of PBX vendors about Belgacom’s SIP certification process, and organised a dialogue between the parties. A fair amount of comments, explanations, adaptations & corrections were forthcoming on multiple topics. We have now asked the vendors for comments on Belgacom’s answers. We are pleased that our role as facilitator has brought substantial value for all interested parties, although some bottlenecks remain.

3. INTUG responds to BEREC Consultation on cross border services

In a response to the BEREC (27 European regulators) consultation on barriers to provision of communications services for businesses, INTUG said the next five years will see rapidly accelerating take up and growth in the business use of many new e-applications and technologies, in both public and private institutions, for which the current fragmented European regulatory landscape is unsuited.

Nick White, Executive Vice President of INTUG, said “A specific legal and administrative regime needs to be established to facilitate cross border business services, without damaging the value of the existing regulatory framework for mass-market domestic users.”

1. BELTUG’s priorities for 2011-2012

More than 260 companies gave us their priorities in our 2011 Survey! Based on this input, these are the new BELTUG priorities: innovations in mobility solutions; fixed-mobile convergence; mobile device management; corporate policy on splitting private and corporate use, Bring Your Own Device and the use of social networks; the benefits of virtualisation and cloud architecture for enterprise networks; the impact of video communication on company networks; security (network, mobile device vulnerability and cloud services), best practices in adopting UC/collaboration and cloud services.

These topics will drive a very ambitious action plan, which will be presented at our next Member Forum on October 6.

2. BELTUG welcomes Centric as our new partner

We take great pleasure in welcoming Centric as our new partner. We at BELTUG are very honoured by the trust and support of our partners. When we define our action plan and deliverables, our partners are asked to add expertise or interesting case stories to our programs.

3. Extended media partnerships benefit our members

We have prolonged our media partnership with Data News and Trends for another three years. Don’t forget to take advantage of the benefits and get your free Data News e-newsletter, available in Dutch and French.

4. A warm welcome to our newest members

We would like to welcome all our new members who joined last month: Polycom, Ascure, Pari-Link, Exclusive Networks, Argenta Spaarbank.

Information and vision
We want BELTUG members to be the best informed ICT decision makers and professionals.

1.  BELTUG recommendations: IPv6 - act now or later?

This year, BELTUG organised sessions and presentations on the topic of IPv6. Companies don’t need to migrate yet, but there are several actions you should already look into, in order to be ready on time. You can find these recommendations together in the document BELTUG has put together. To help companies prepare, we will keep IPv6 on the BELTUG agenda.

2. New Consultation - experiences with dark fibre offerings

One of our members is looking into the market for dark fibre connections in Belgium. They want to learn about the suppliers and availability, and about the experiences other companies have had.

We would be very grateful if you could send your comments (a short, telegram/bullet style message is fine) to info@beltug.be. Or, if you prefer, this member would be happy to contact you directly to discuss your experiences (just indicate: this person can contact me).

3. New replays and cases

We have several new case stories for you on the BELTUG website:

  • Port of Ghent: Failing to prepare means preparing to fail. The Port of Ghent planned carefully to implement SIP trunking without a hitch (Hans Van Ootegem)
  • VERA takes extranet into the cloud. Replacing hosted servers with cloud service let VERA staff focus on added value projects (Freddy Deprez)
  • Case ACV-CSC: Please don’t wait until your users complain about poor response times! (Johan Vandewalle, IT Manager)

New replays available for members:

  • VDAB, the network that delivers real added value for employment! Tom De Leeuw, Service Delivery Manager, VDAB
  • University of Ghent gets top marks in SIP and UC, Arsène Wauters, Network and Telephony Manager, University of Ghent
  • Crids - Cloud computing: A survey of the legal issues, Philippe Laurent – Lawyer and Senior Researcher, CRIDS

4. BELTUG Consultation on Private GSM

In the UK and the Netherlands, GSM “guard band” frequencies let companies use private GSMs for in-house communication. In Belgium, however, these frequencies are not (yet) available for private use. Many BELTUG members have expressed interest in this technology, while others believe deals from mobile operators make Private GSM obsolete. We will explore this topic further, as it is quite clear that the “one phone, one number” approach is becoming very important. A brainstorming with interested members to define our position is the first step.
