Grab the IoT opportunity - featuring 4 real-life cases (X-change)

Location:Roularta Conference Center, Zellik

It’s not a distinct tool itself, but IoT can be a powerful catalyst to boost your business or reduce your time- and resource-consuming processes. Although the technology is still maturing, several organisations are already setting up new solutions and discovering fresh opportunities.

In this session, we have a look at 4 real life cases, gaining inspiration from smart parking spaces in Liege, an academic testing ground at KU Leuven, a smart bike sharing platform in Ghent and camera surveillance in Mechelen.

Please note that in order to guarantee an interactive discussion, we are keeping the number of attendees limited, so be sure to book your spot in time.

13:45 How smart parking is shaping urban mobility

Etay Oren describes how CommuniThings’s smart parking solutions address mobility problems in parking facilities that can cause long queues, a lengthy search for a space, and increasing traffic congestion.  The turnkey IoT platform consists of wireless, in-ground sensors, and parking management software for residents, controllers and parking managers.

14:30 From 'DingNet' testing ground at KU Leuven to comprehensive business solution

KU Leuven’s DingNet is a testing ground for students and researchers, that allows them to experiment with IoT applications and sensors.  Antennas and gateways all over Leuven, Heverlee and the surroundings, facilitate research into IoT solutions that will be really relevant to society. The program can be easily extended to other campuses in Flanders.

But this LoRaWAN communication infrastructure is only one aspect of a solid IoT solution.  Our speakers will also discuss elements including scalability, security, key management, sensor architecture and management systems. You will come away with a good understanding of DingNet and the technical requirements for a solid IoT business solution.

Dirk Janssens, Senior Network Engineer, KU Leuven ICTS (Dutch)
Nelson Matthys, CEO, VersaSense (English)

15:45 IoT as a Service - smart locks and onward

Mobit is a Ghent based IoT start-up that operates Belgium's largest dockless bike sharing platform. Mobit developed in-house both the operating platform and the smart bike lock, which combines the strength of a normal lock with the latest IoT sensors. In this presentation, we will learn about the technical challenges of an operating IoT platform, the marketing challenges to the innovation from existing business models, and the future opportunities for the platform in other market applications.

16:30 Camera surveillance in Mechelen - integration of the 'bicycle beacon' project

The Mechelen-Willebroek police zone has integrated user-friendly IoT solutions into its SmartCity concept.  Since 2003, the townscape has changed thoroughly, especially regarding the evolution of threats, so a future-proof observation tool has become increasingly important.  From intelligent cameras that give real-time, accurate overview images, through multifunctional control rooms, to intelligent geolocalisation of bicycles equipped with identification tags, these applications aim to make Mechelen a safer city.

Our speaker, chief of police in Mechelen, will sketch out the evolution of camera surveillance in the city of Mechelen, from 2003 till today.  With the 'bicycle beacons' project, he will demonstrate the added value of various types of cameras in the police zone.

Daniël Dumoulin, Commissaris – Technologie gestuurde politiezorg, Lokale politie Mechelen-Willebroek (Dutch)
