INTUG/BELTUG Joins Forces with Campaign for Clear Licensing

INTUG/BELTUG are joining forces with the Campaign for Clear Licensing, a not-for-profit organisation whose mission is to work with software publishers, end users and the reseller community to reduce the indirect costs of using commercial software.

The Campaign for Clear Licensing aims to improve the clarity and usability of software license terms and conditions and develop a code of conduct for use by the industry when resolving disputes, including during audits.

The need for an initiative such as the Campaign for Clear Licensing is obvious: in general, organisations are enthusiastic users of technology and are happy to pay a fair price for it. However software licensing is increasingly complex and is actually becoming a hindrance to the adoption of new transformative technology and innovation.

Unfortunately some software publishers view licensing as a mechanism for extracting revenue and protecting market share and this does not serve the interest of customers.

Anyone involved in the procurement and/or interpretation of software licensing would agree that among the major software vendors, licensing practices often border on predatory and do not adequately clarify terms in such ways that can be:

  1. Understood by the layperson;
  2. Applied across the heterogeneous mix of platforms and infrastructures that comprise the typical organisation, and;
  3. Reasonably enforced by organisations with the best of intentions.

INTUG/BELTUG urge those interested to get involved and register their interest and to provide direct feedback on the Campaign for Clear Licensing Manifesto. The Campaign for Clear Licensing is a collaborative effort and can only succeed if you participate by providing your input and feedback on their activities and proposals. Feel free to share this initiative with as many people as possible.
