Beltug meets with Athumi: the future of data sharing in Flanders

On 19 September, Beltug brought together some CIOs and privacy experts to brainstorm with Athumi, the new Flemish data utility company, in Ghent. The goal? To dive deep into the opportunities and challenges around data sharing, and to explore how Athumi can support this.

Data is now one of the most valuable assets for organisations, and many of our members are exploring how to share data effectively – but it’s not always easy. With 90% of new data generated in the last two years alone, managing it securely and efficiently is more important than ever. At the same time, regulations like the GDPR and the Data Act mean that businesses need to be careful about compliance, which can be especially tricky when data is flowing between companies. As a result, CIOs can be caught between the need to innovate and the operational risks that come with data sharing and compliance issues.

Real-world cases

At the meeting, Bjorn De Vidts and Frederik Van Outryve from Athumi explained its goal is to help businesses navigate these challenges by providing secure and reliable access to premium data and creating platforms that make data sharing easier and safer.

Athumi shared several real-world use cases about its activities, including:

  • Hyper-personalised media content: Dutch media companies are working together to centralise consumer profiles and provide personalised content, allowing consumers to control which companies can access their data. This initiative is still in the minimum viable product phase but aims to enable data sharing between media providers.
  • itE powered by Athumi: This project brings together Fluvius, Bebat and KBC to enable better management of the lifecycle of assets like solar panels through a digital asset passport.

How to ensure proper governance

Athumi sees itself as critical infrastructure for trusted data exchange, much like Swift facilitates secure international banking transactions. Proper governance is essential for the sustainable growth of data ecosystems, with public-private partnerships playing a key role in creating frameworks that go beyond simple consumer consent. To support this, Athumi also focuses on simplifying consent management, making it easier for consumers to control how their data is shared through platforms like itsme and Doccle.

Creating strong relationships with different players is a key focus of Beltug. We will continue to follow the developments in secure data sharing, and keep our members informed.
