Update on Broadcom: Lack of progress at the European level

The situation around Broadcom’s licensing policy continues to evolve, with increased engagement from European user organisations. Beltug supports the official complaint made by our sister CIO organisation VOICE (Germany) to the European Commission regarding Broadcom’s licensing practices (in German). In it, VOICE accuses Broadcom of imposing ‘exorbitant and unfair price increases by means of arbitrarily compiled product bundles as part of the switch from perpetual licensing to subscription.’

Beltug, along with Cigref (France) and CIO Platform Nederland (Netherlands), formally notify the European Commission of our support for the complaint. This collective move reflects a shared concern across national boundaries.

The four associations recently met with Cabinet Henna Virkkunen, the Finnish Commissioner for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy. Broadcom’s practices were a key topic of discussion during this meeting.

ECCO reports no improvement with Broadcom

In parallel, the second European Cloud Competition Observatory (ECCO) report has been published, and indicates no progress has been made with Broadcom. The report finds that Broadcom’s broad and heavy-handed imposition of unfair contract terms for cloud infrastructure service providers is continuing unchecked. Beltug and Cigref participate in the ECCO initiative in an observer role, contributing insights relevant to the issues.
