Why this AI Playbook?
AI development and adoption are moving fast, with the technology popping up in more and more tools and services. While this creates opportunities, it also raises questions: Where do we start? How do we avoid the hype and focus on real value? The AI Playbook aims to offers a hands-on framework for a structured, thoughtful approach. While it was developed for the public sector in Flanders, it can also be useful for other organisations looking to integrate AI in a way that aligns with their strategy, governance and way of working.
What’s in the AI Playbook?
The Playbook is built around five core pillars:
- Vision & strategy: defining AI ambitions and roadmap
- Innovation: identifying impactful AI use cases and tools
- Reliable AI: managing risks and complying with legal frameworks such as the EU AI Act
- People & organisation: ensuring the team is ready and AI-literate
- AI architecture: managing data and infrastructure efficiently
It also includes tailored roadmaps including key activities, practical examples and progress checklists based on the organisation’s current AI maturity, with three profiles:
- AI Scout: just getting started with AI
- AI Pilot: experimenting with AI
- AI Expert: already scaling (AI Expert)
How to use it
The AI Playbook is a flexible toolbox, rather than a fixed instruction manual. You can use it to map out your organisation’s position, set priorities, and take concrete next steps at your own pace. To help you get off to a start in a structured way, the AI Playbook outlines a four-step approach:
Step 1: Explore the Playbook: Get to know the five key pillars and the phases of AI adoption. The ‘Introductie tot het AI Playbook’ gives a quick orientation and highlights what to consider, before you dive into the AI Playbook itself. Both are downloadable here. https://www.vlaanderen.be/digitaal-vlaanderen/onze-diensten-en-platformen/ai-expertisecentrum/het-ai-playbook#downloadsectie
Step 2: Identify your organisation profile: AI Scout, AI Pilot or AI Expert. A short self-assessment helps you quickly find your starting point.
Step 3: Get to work: with the AI Playbook’s detailed activities, templates and real-life examples. The content is organised to guide you through practical actions across all five pillars, based on your profile.
Step 4: Join the community: You can sign up for the interest list and connect with others working on AI across the public sector.
