A global approach to privacy? Not so easy!

“What a challenge privacy is for a company that is active in different countries and continents,” commented Danielle Jacobs in her DataNews Opinion article of 25 May 2018 (available in Dutch only) [link to Beltug in the Press page]. Her recent trip to Taiwan to take part in Smart City Summit on behalf of Beltug and INTUG gave her an opportunity to note that, while the GDPR has everyone here in Europe thinking ‘data privacy’, that is certainly not the case everywhere. And while she appreciated the benefits of combining data in a single application – making cashless payments anywhere easy, for example – she highlighted the trade-offs of having all your information available to both government and ‘data miners’. “Our approach in Europe is not so bad. Maybe it will inspire others around the world.”
