Danielle Jacobs, General Manager of Beltug, was invited to speak at the workshop on “Free flow of data - a cornerstone of the digital single market”, at the European Parliament, Brussels, 20 February 2018. She joined high-level speakers including Bertrand Deprez (Digital Europe), Christian Borggreen (CCIA), Lenard Koschwitz (Allied for Startups), Gabriella Cattaneo (IDC-European Government Consulting) and Jan Krewer (Syntec Numerique) in the roundtable panel on “Economic and legal aspects of free flow of non-personal data.” The workshop was chaired by MEP Anna Maria Corazza Bildt, and Commissioner Andrus Ansip gave the keynote speech. Presentations and general discussion enabled an exchange of views between academics, national experts and stakeholders.
The European Commission has proposed a regulation on the free flow of non-personal data. Beltug supports the proposal, but has concerns regarding the difficulties in switching cloud service providers and wants to avoid vendor lock-in practices. The Commission proposes a self-regulatory approach, encouraging providers to develop codes of conduct regarding the conditions under which users can port data between cloud service providers and back into their own IT environments.
